Required documents

To ride a speed pedelec, you must be at least 16 years old and hold one of the following driving licences:

  • Driving licence AM (moped 45 km/h)

  • Driving licence A (motorcycle)

  • Driving licence B (car)

In addition, always carry the following documents:

  • The certificate of conformity

  • The registration certificate

Speed pedelec insurance

Civil liability insurance is required by law for riding a speed pedelec. Check if this is included in your family insurance. You can also take out this insurance via o2o, if your employer allows it. If you have civil liability insurance through o2o, you make a claim with the claim form if you have an accident.

Number plate and registration

Every speed pedelec must have a number plate. o2o arranges for mandatory registration with the DIV (Vehicle Registration Authority). The number plate is sent to your bicycle dealer, who then fits the plate to the bicycle before you pick it up. Check regularly to make sure the number plate is still properly attached.

Safety

At speeds of up to 45 km/h, it goes without saying that a bicycle or moped helmet is mandatory. As a driver of a speed pedelec, wear a helmet that conforms to EN1078 and protects both the temples and the back of the head. We recommend helmets designed specifically for speed pedelecs, as they offer extra protection and comfort.

Traffic rules

Drivers of speed pedelecs are required to comply with the traffic rules for mopeds. Pay attention to traffic signs that indicate whether using the bicycle lane is prohibited or mandatory. For more information, visit the website of the police or Speed Pedelec Flanders.

Additional equipment

  • You must not transport children under the age of 3. For children between the ages of 3 and 8, you are required to use an appropriate restraint system.

  • Wearing a fluorescent jacket is not mandatory, but is recommended for extra visibility.

  • A rearview mirror on the left side of your handle bars is a useful extra, and helps you navigate traffic safely.
